PHYTOREMEDIATION

Phytoremediation, one of a number of innovative technologies being increasingly used for environmental remediation, is the use of plants, either naturally occurring or genetically modified, to clean up contaminants in the environment. The technology is commercially feasible now and has been extensively and effectively tested in the cleanup of real contamination situations, including phytoremediation projects currently being conducted by the company and its collaborators. Phytoremediation is one of the innovative technologies being promoted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and field phytoremediation projects have been sponsored by EPA and other U.S. government agencies like the Department of Energy and the Department of Defense. According to the EPA, there are well over 200 sites in the United States where phytoremediation has been used or tested as a remedial alternative.

Phytoremediation offers the following benefits over other technologies:
  • Low capital and operating costs.
  • Permanent treatment solution; can completely mineralize organic contaminants.
  • Effectively remediates bioavailable fraction of contaminant.
  • Esthetically pleasing; generally enjoys strong public support
